I had Ms. Josephson as a professor when I attended CCAD (years ago) and she was wonderful, making art philosophy interesting, educational and fun. This should be a good series.

Join philosophy professor and artist Susan Josephson in an exploration of art as seen down through the ages through the eyes of philosophers, theologians, artists and you. The provocative conversations include:

March 1: The power of art in relation to the sacred, and why people have found it dangerous. Why have religions banned representational art?

March 8: The Neo-Platonic view that art is central to religion and artists are religious leaders. Is beauty good?

March 15: Tolstoy and his idea that the true purpose of art is to infect the viewer with the most spiritually evolved emotions of the age so that the human spirit can progress.

March 22: Classical Indian art theory teaches that art gives rise to emotionally flavored bliss. Should art promote the Hindu goals of life: right action, pleasure, wealth, and spiritual freedom?

March 29: Should we live our lives as works of art? Classical Japanese art theory teaches that art expresses principles of Zen Buddhism. Zen art shocks the viewer into a moment of calm where thinking stops and knowing fills the gap, thus helping us transcend ego, and promoting mindfulness.

Old House equals an ART CANVAS, YES!

Really this has nothing to do with the article,
it's from a bathroom renovation in my house.
But it could become art if I wanted it to!

This is a great idea to help with some of our housing problems - well right before they take the wrecking ball to it. But being a woman who loves power tools and taking apart stuff...this is a great idea for artists who love big sculptural events!

Old House Becomes Art Canvas in San Francisco

A man gave nine artists free reign of the house with one stipulation: they had to create art inside using only things found in the home.

“What we wanted to do was give this home a secondary life,” said Mortazavi, standing in front of the home’s curiously stripped down facade. “We’re giving it a secondary life by inviting these nine artists inside the building.”

Mortazavi gave nine artists free reign of the house with one stipulation: they had to create art inside using only things found in the home. (a video link)

In the kitchen an artist carved a labyrinth in the linoleum. In a hallway, Artist Andy Vogt created a subfloor, almost like a wooden moat meandering toward a doorless doorway to nowhere.

In the basement, Yulia Pinkusevich stripped the home’s wiring of its casing and then fashioned it into a colorful sculpture.

Jesse Schlesinger occupied a 10 by 12-foot room, fashioning furniture from base board and door frames. He even made a plaster cast of one of the home’s Victorian doors and hung it in his room.

Mortazavi said the project will bring an unexpected twist to the home’s long history… “to give the building a sort of a wake and a funeral before it goes.”

Cool, huh?!

APPLICATION PROCESS & JURYING

Applications must be received by March 9, 2012 and include four recent digital images of your work, one recent booth image, AND a $20 jury fee to be considered for acceptance into the festival. Slides will no longer be accepted.

Every applicant is juried by a panel of experienced artisans.

Exhibitors may only exhibit work in the category for which the jury accepted them. If your work spans multiple categories you must apply in each category separately.

Multiple exhibitors with different items cannot exhibit in one booth. Exhibitors must complete sepa-rate applications and submit the fee for separate booth spaces. Exhibitors may request on the appli-cation to be located near another exhibitor. The Jury Committee reserves the right to approve co-exhibitors when each person contributes artistically to each piece exhibited.

SILENT AUCTION

You are invited to contribute an item of your work to the Festival’s Silent Auction held during the two-day event. The proceeds from the Auction will help offset the cost of using the park and its facilities. Items should be representative of your quality of workmanship and include a description and retail price to maximize the value of your work.

If you wish to donate a piece to the auction, please indicate your intent on your application.

Volunteers will collect items from your booth and present you with a receipt of your donation prior to 11am on Saturday, July 14th.

JUDGING & AWARDS

Westerville Walkway and Emerging Artists are not eligible to receive awards.

ACCEPTANCE, ENTRY & INFORMATION

The decisions of the Jury Committee are final.

All work must be of fine quality and be original work of the accepted exhibitor. Items that will not be accepted include: imports, craft supplies, kits, commercially produced items, home-style crafts, manufactured beads & other mass produced items, dried flowers, or work produced by anyone other than the accepted exhibitor. Not all of the display can be prints. A portion of the display must be originals.

You will be notified after Friday, April 13, 2012 of your acceptance or non-acceptance.

Booth spaces are 12’ x 12’. A $75 entry fee will be due by Friday, May 18, 2012 to confirm your attendance and receive a space assignment. Do not send booth fees with your application!

The accepted exhibitor must be in his/her booth during Festival hours. Substitute exhibitors are not permitted with the exception

All Five (5) RECENT digital images are to be submitted in the category entered by the artist. Four (4) images must be of individual pieces representative of the body of work which will be exhibited. Do not send extra images, photos, or samples as they will not be considered in the jury process.

Images must cover all types of work that will be for sale. It is critical to the jury committee that your images depict the quality of your work. Images submitted on CD’s will not be returned unless you enclose an appropriately sized envelope with sufficient postage for the weight of the CD. The jury committee reserves the right to retain CD’s of first-time accepted exhibitors until the opening of the Festival.

This was an incredible busy day and all I wanted was time to rest, perhaps a hot bath and a nice glass of wine ...and then someone sent me this wonderful poem. Too bad I have a meeting tonight and can't quite relax yet!

Time to stop and smell the roses......an incredible poem by a 14 year old.

Game Plan - creating collages from game boards

As a recycled artist, I have a tendency to collect and collect and collect. Over the past several years I have been collecting game boards mostly from garage sales. Often the game pieces are missing but the boards are intact. And they make great collage bases.

So go out and collect and have some fun.....and if you have any old game boards, let me know!

Doodles and Presidents - Atlantic Monthly

I was attending a lecture, sitting in the front row and really was listening. But when I need to listen carefully, I doodle. It helps me to concentrate on what the speaker is saying. Doodling doesn't mean I'm not listening. The visual drawing help me remember key topics and important points - my own shorthand I guess.

And on this Presidents Day, I wondered if there was artwork by our own US Presidents.

I found a fun article written about doodles from Presidents - All the Presidents Doodles from the Atlantic Monthly, September 2006.

The doodle added here is an excerpt from the magazine article....

Dwight D. Eisenhower (1953–1961)

More than any other president, Eisenhower doodled on agendas, memos, and other official documents. This agenda, from June 28, 1954, didn’t list the crisis in Guatemala as an item for discussion, but Eisenhower did. The day before, CIA-backed forces had deposed the government of Jacobo Arbenz in favor of a regime that was more pro-American (or at least more pro–United Fruit Company). With Guatemala clearly on his mind, the president sketched himself as a trim young man with big gunboats backing him up—a strong leader restoring order to the strife-torn Latin nation.

The 15th Great Backyard Bird Count starts this Friday!

The 15th Great Backyard Bird Count starts this Friday!

February 17-20 we invite you to be part of a massive citizen-science effort across North America. Tens of thousands of fellow bird watchers will be counting birds and submitting their checklists to www.birdcount.org.

Just watch birds for at least 15 minutes at any location and tally the highest number of each bird species you see at any one time. Submit a new checklist for each day and each new location where you count.

This is an annual project that provides crucially important information about bird population numbers, migration/range changes etc. across the USA for scientists. It's easy and fun to do, and an activity that even school classrooms can participate in if there is a feeder outside their window (great educational opportunity!). It takes as little as 15 minutes on each day of the coming weekend, starting on this Friday, Feb.17 (you don't even have to do all the days - any little bit counts!). I've participated in this for several years now and it's very rewarding. The information on the ebird website is amazing! I was astounded by the number of species recorded for the area around Westerville.

Things You Can Do During the Countdown to the GBBC:

• Forward this message to neighbors, friends, and relatives, asking them to participate. Every checklist counts!

• Fill your bird feeders if you plan to count birds at your feeders.

• Charge up your camera batteries so you can capture that perfect picture for the GBBC photo contest, or document a rarity.

• If you'd like a preview of the birds you might see in your area, enter your zip or postal code on this web page to get printable tally sheets.

Things to Watch for During the GBBC
• In past counts, participants were most likely to report American Robins in areas without snow. Will more robins be seen farther north this year?

• Will some birds, such as Eastern Phoebes and geese, begin their migrations earlier because of the warmer temperatures and lack of snow or ice in many parts of the country?

• Fewer Blue Jays have been reported in the Northeast in recent months; will GBBC reports show the same trend?

• Where will the Snowy Owls turn up next?

We will DELETE the ENTIRE checklist and you must submit a new, corrected checklist in the usual way. Home is pure?

Any holiday will make me feel that there is a need for family, for home, for the safety and fun of those who love us. My parents are deceased and the childhood home is long ago sold to some other family making memories in it now. Home now is where my husband is and where I hope that the children will come to visit.

My family is now more friends than relatives as we live so far away from each other. As we age, our neighborhood becomes our close friends and new family as we share dinners, family news and so much more.

A few months back, my youngest son posted this song on his facebook and I smiled as I read it. I know that he is far away on the other side of the country but he has so many friends and of course us here. And I hope he still believes that we are home to him.

Singing Buckeyes - helping a friend in need.

A friend of mine, a fellow Rotarian, recently went under some surgery related to her breast cancer. She is a very positive woman and is in the process of documenting her journey - especially in the reconstruction phase of this terrible disease.

At one of the last Rotary meetings before her surgery, she asked if there could be a table just for the women. She needed to feel the comfort of women and the support of women. Since we do not discriminate against anything, we did have one male sit down. My friend explained her situation and the gentleman admitted that he was one of the few men who had a breast cancer scare so he understood what she was going through.

The surgery went well, and to show more support the women of this Rotary group gave her the Singing Buckeyes for Valentines Day. I unfortunately could not go but what a fun gift. The Buckeyes were scheduled to come to her home last night and serenade her. I have heard the Singing Buckeyes in action and love them.

On this Valentine Day, you may be hearing them all over central Ohio. Love is in the air!

The Singing Buckeyes mission is simple:

Perpetuate the American institution of the vocal quartet and a cappella singing in the barbershop style.
Promote and encourage vocal harmony and good fellowship among Chapter/Society members throughout the world.
Encourage and promote the education of our members and the general public in music appreciation of barbershop quartet and chorus singing and of a cappella singing in the barbershop style.
Evaluate the public's perception of a cappella harmony in the barbershop style to that of a recognized and important American cultural art form; to elevate the image of the Singing Buckeyes to that of a respected member of the arts community and to maintain these perceptions and this image upon achievement.
Educate and develop our members in barbershop singing through a consistent, exemplary musical program.

Gardening Insights - living art forms

Tho we have not had a terrible winter so far, this is the time that I begin to look at gardening magazines, dreaming of the perfect garden and search for the best tips. Actually I am an avid gardener for about 2 weeks and then yell "ok, now you all grow...go go go...!" Water, weeding and fertilizer would probably work better.....

Here is a local garden series - perhaps I should attend....since I really use a lot of recycled materials instead of plants...... the iron objects in the pictures are from my boiler - which gave out a few years ago and I asked the furnace guys to leave the very heavy iron insides. They thought I was nuts but they make great art.....

This market will meet this year from the first weekend in June to the last weekend in August. Due to football games in September, we have decided to only have three months this year. 10 am- 1pm. (regardless of the weather or holiday). We will also have a special Mother's day weekend market on that Saturday. May 12th.

Artists, farmers, flowers, home party vendors and any small business that would like to be a part of the this weekly market, please let us know.

We are also looking for some fun themes for each saturday and for different non -profit/fundraising groups to be a part of the weekly market. Let us know any non profits or theme ideas that you have.

It is $75/3 months payable in advance. If you would like to try out one time, then the cost is $20 for a one time visit but we will use that towards the total season costs.

May 31st from 6-8pm there will be a GREEN party at Alum Creek - a green craft, green vendors, lots of green information, Otterbein Lake Project event and so much more. Put on by the Westerville City, Parks and Recreations Department and involving so many great Green organizations and more.

The event will promote as many as green organizations as possible from our city's own green team to local and private green groups.

And for the fun of it....we will be adding our own green project.

Save your plastic water bottles and let us make the basics for fun flowers. If you can drop them off at the gallery, we will cut them and begin the painting process. Then on May 31st, we will have lots of pre cut flowers parts to let our visitors create fun flowers.

But we also will have plans to make our fun monster - from plastic bags. A special workshop will be created just so everyone can create a Green Monster who may be white/blue/red or what ever color plastic bag you have.

Cols Children Theatre - make friends!

Columbus Children's Theatre at Gallery 202

Columbus Children's Theatre has been using our space at Gallery 202, Partners in Art, Inc. for the past several years. Classes and camps from 5 years old and up and we have enjoyed them so much.

Stomping on the floor, yelling loud, laughter and watching budding actors has been such a joy.

Today, we are having a final performance for this session. Our teacher, Kayla has encouraged, laughed with, been surprised at time at the abilities of these young actors - 8 years -12 years old.

I get to be in the background getting ready for my own class (Saturday Creative Minds), I listen to the children practice, discuss terms, help each other create better performances and become friends.

In the age where we often worry about bullies, we should watch these kids work together. Self esteem is abundant by the end of the 5 weeks. Friendships are established and tho they may not last long, they are unforgettable. Since classes are offered on an ongoing basis, many times old friends meet again!

I have learned many theatre games and have used them in my own classes - especially Night in the Museum and Zip, Zat, Zot. Great fun.

When I worked in the school systems (many years ago as an Occupational Therapist), we took part in a very special art program with our middle age disabled students. We made "ourselves" in a doll form and entered them into the Very Special Art Exhibit. And they were a success.

I do smile as I think about the now young adults and how they liked being a part of their own art show.

OTTERBEIN HOSTS AUTHOR OF HANBY NOVEL FOR BOOK SIGNING

Westerville, OH—Otterbein University will host a book signing with Rosslyn Elliott, the author of Sweeter than Birdsong, the second novel in a trilogy based on the lives of the Hanby family, from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 10, at the bookstore in the Campus Center, 100 W. Home St. The event is open to the public, and books will be available for purchase.

Sweeter than Birdsong follows the events of the series’ first book, Fairer than Morning, this time focusing on Ben Hanby and Kate Winter during their time at Otterbein. The story includes many features of 19^thcentury Otterbein and Westerville life. She is currently working on the third book in the series, Lovelier than Daylight, which is slated for release in fall 2012.

Publisher’s Weekly said, “Author Elliott creates a pleasing blend of fact and fiction in this second installment in the Saddler’s Legacy series. …Readers will appreciate the well-told tale as well as its historical basis.”

Author Rosslyn Elliott was born into a military family and lived in four states and two foreign countries before she graduated from high school. Her frequent relocation into new social scenes encouraged her to become a close observer of others, and a writer. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English and theatre studies at Yale University and a doctorate degree in English at Emory University. I met the most wonderful person today. Miss Brenda Nicole creates hats - not quickly done, good enough for one or two uses, but hats to reminds us of the past and to provide an incredible experience for years to come.

Brenda loves hats - especially from the 20's, 30's, 40's and she can tell you all about them. She uses specially made forms to create hats from a variety of materials. ( She does have to wait until the Queen of England hat makers have their forms first before she gets her!)

Brenda is from our area and spends hours creating her hats, and does sell them locally. But what I found fascinating about her was her stories about why she does what she does. She loves the historical facts, can list actresses who wore the type of hats she re-creates, describes her material she uses with lovingly care. Simply wonderful.

Columbus College of Art & Design presents two new exhibitions in the Canzani Center Gallery: Bending the Mirror, which samples the fecund diversity of international figurative art today, and home., which examines what we might call “normal” suburbia through the work of painter Jessica Rohrer and photographers Bill Owens and Mark Slankard.

Bending the Mirror

This exhibtion samples a portion of the complex information found in new figurative art. These works, while connected in subject, display a timely spectrum of ideas, perspectives, issues of identity, and sociopolitical agendas. Christian Faur and Mark Bush, two artists from central Ohio, will be part of the diverse international roster.

Meet "BOB" - or come and make your own

On Saturdays, we offer a fun creative "chaos" studio class for kids ages 7-12ish. Although we have some set activities, it is up to the young artists to choose their art of the day and we will provide materials to get them started. From drawing, painting, collages, multi media, sculptures, we give imagination a push and we are always excited and amazed by the results.

So Meet BOB!

Recently in our Junior Creative Minds program, one of the students just wanted to make a doll - often they are called "ugly" dolls - I think we are going to call them "BOB" dolls from now on instead.

Sarah created BOB - with such enthusiasm - that everyone wanted to create "BOB". And why not?! BOB represents the idea of recycling material, trying an almost old world craft of actually sewing. (Our machine is at least 25 years old and we do coax it along. We wouldn't want it any other way.)

Patience, creating from scratch, learning new techniques, deciding for yourself what you want to create is important to us and for us to teach any of our students regardless of age.

Finding just the right button for eyes or yarn for the mouth and using old (ok they are ugly) ties for arms and legs - BOB stands over 6 feet tall - that is if he could stand! Sarah search and search and tried several ideas before she settled on the just the right items for BOB's wonderful facial expression.

She wanted a soft material for the body but different material for the head. Pinning the material together, helping to guide the material through the sewing machine, not losing pins everywhere - all were a part of learning and so much talking, talking,talking going on all the time. How could anyone not smile and laugh especially when she held up BOB for all.

Her cousin also made a soft friend - un named but he learned how to use the machine - (we told him it would help him learn to drive a car too:)) And he proudly walked away with it in his arms!

Next time we have our Saturday Creative Junior Studio, we will be making ~~dolls~~ "BOBs" because that is what the other young creative inspiring kids wanted. Way too fun!

Organizers of even the most successful events cannot afford to sit back and hope that crowds will continue to show up year after year. The results of inaction could result in no crowd at all. To avoid this disaster, appoint a Publicity/Promotion committee and make certain that its members develop an effective promotional strategy early in the planning process.

Remember, you are not selling a product; you are selling the benefits of the product. The benefit you are selling is entertainment! A festival is essentially show business. Consider these benefits as part of the entertainment package when creating the image for your festival:

Excitement, fun, happiness
Relaxation
Social interaction
Prestige, ego satisfaction
Education

Members of the publicity committee need to be aware of the following concerns:

Much of what is promoted - entertainment, for example - will be arranged by other committees. Therefore the publicity people must have a good working relationship with everybody helping with the festival.
With so much to do, timing will be critical in many instances. Establish a timeline.
Be sure local and regional people whom the media are likely to contact for what is going on know exact times, dates, and your media contact's name and telephone number.
Supply the local tourism sector (motels, service stations, restaurants) with printed maps and schedules so they know times and directions to events and can pass that information on to their customers and guests.
Media representatives are serious about deadlines. Make certain that press releases and other informational materials are in the hands of reporters on time.
Don't be shy about calling in to or volunteering for local talk shows.
This committee should evaluate the effectiveness of methods and ideas used and suggest changes as required.

For example, a company might incorporate your message in some of their billboard advertising or cosponsor radio or TV ads.

Here are some examples of promotional methods used by event organizers. Most of this promotion can be done at little or no cost. What's required are two things that money can't always buy - creativity and imagination.

If your marketing strategy determines that brochures are an effective way to reach your target audience, then carefully design the best brochure possible.

First answer these three questions:

What do you want the brochures to do? (Set your purposes and objectives.)
Who is your audience?
How will you reach your audience? (Decide on a distribution system.)

Points to Consider in Designing a Brochure

Keep it simple and uncluttered.
Have more open space than type.
Be different, if possible.
Full color is best but most expensive.
Build an image through pictures and factual information.
Remember your target audience.
Stick to one selling message.
The quality of your brochure refl ects the quality of your festival.
If using a brochure, always include a map with directions to your community and the location of events once the visitor arrives. Also, include how to get more information; a telephone number, mailing address and email address.

	"The Planet In Our Eyes" (The colour of our skin is different but we all see the same WORLD: united through PEACE!) created by Andra-Alida Baban of Baia Mare, Maramures, Romania for the 2004 Global Art Project exchange.

The mission of the Global Art Project is to joyously create a culture of peace through art. The Project spreads world peace by promoting tolerance and non-violence. The Global Art Project is an expression of the idea: We Are All One.

Project Description

Anyone can participate!

The Global Art Project is an International Art Exchange for Peace. Here's how it works: Participants create a work of art in any medium, expressing their vision of global peace and goodwill. The art is displayed locally in each participant’s community. Global Art Project then organizes an international exchange by matching participants—group-to-group and individual-to-individual. The exchange occurs April 23-30 biennially, resulting in thousands of people sending messages of Peace around the world at one time—visions of unity simultaneously encircle the Earth. The art is sent as a gift of global friendship and exhibited in the receiving community.
Participants may send documentation of the art created and of the people who came together to create the art to the GAP Art Bank. Global Art Project exhibitions, books, slide presentations, and this website give people an opportunity to experience visions of peace and unity created by individuals from diverse cultures around the world.

How to Participate

Registration for the next exchange in April 2012 will begin in May 2011.
First, register by February 29, 2012. GAP will match you with a participant. Participants in the US and Canada are required to include a minimum US $15 donation for individuals and US $20 donation for groups. Participants in other countries are asked to send a donation if possible.
March 2012: Create a work of art expressing your personal vision of global peace and goodwill. The art may be in any medium -- visual or literary art, audio or videotapes/CDs of performances, etc. -- which can be sent from one group or individual to another.
April 1-22, 2012: Display/share your work locally in your own community. This could be on the walls at work or school, in a hospital, a public library, gallery, bank, local café or restaurant -- wherever you feel comfortable sharing your vision. You may want to join together with a group of participants to find a place where you can display your work together.
April 23-30, 2012: Exchange your art with the person or group with whom you've been matched. The art you receive will be yours to keep, and likewise, the art you send off will be kept as a gift of global friendship. It would be nice to include a photo of yourself and a personal note.
Finally, as a completion of the Global Art Project for Peace exchange, you may choose to display the art which you've received so that people in your community have an opportunity to experience the diverse visions of global unity from around the world.

You may document your art and the people who created it to be included in the GAP Art Bank. Label the documentary material with name, address, medium and size. Send it to the GAP address. Materials will not be returned.

The rotating Historic Costume Collection exhibit in Fisher Gallery on the second floor of Roush Hall features garments donated by alumni and friends representing different eras from history.

Currently on display through mid-June are men’s and women’s garments from the “Psychedelic ’60s” (1964-1974).

It began with the loss of Camelot, when President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. It ended when Watergate forced Nixon to resign. The intervening years changed America forever. Baby boomers became teens; the Beatles and Twiggy came to town; Civil Rights, the Vietnam War, the pill, pot, LSD and love beads were in the news.

We were in a whirlwind of social turmoil and change. We said goodbye to little hats, white gloves and spike heels. Gone were the grey flannel suit and narrow ties for men. Long hair, short skirts and, above all, bright colors were in fashion. Men discovered Nehru jackets, leisure suits, long hair, sideburns and beards.

For a brief ten years we were peacocks, until after the Bicentennial in 1976, when Americans once again donned the drab hues of blue jeans, pant suits and the formality of working men and women.

When ever there seems to be a levy problem in almost any community, the first thing to go is the ARTS and sadly they are often not fully restored even with a levy passing! Here's the list of why the arts are important in any community.

Absolutely NO Tap dancing...WHAT?

Actually that is a sign in a bookstore in Grandview - the Acorn Bookstore. A wonderful place to explore old books, used books and fun creative "decorations" abound. Under their house rules, it says.

1. About tap dancing: we had to draw the line some where.

But we can tap dance all our way to 2013 and enjoy all the arts. To begin - here is a a little lesson in Marketing - a very basic primer for the Westerville Year of the Arts, 2013 - this is the opinion of the author only - and does not necessarily reflect the Westeville Year of the Arts Committee.

There are five basic “P”s of marketing: product, price, place, people, and promotion. While successful promotion (advertising, PR, direct mail, e-mail marketing) is really the ultimate goal of marketing, it should really be the last step in a larger strategic process. Product, price, place and people all need to be in alignment for promotion to be effective.

PRODUCT

Westerville Year of the Arts 2013 product is our community and all its arts! Music, dance, visual arts, theatre, film, garden arts, crafts, literature, culinary and what ever you feel is art. So let us know about you, your organization, your venues, your programs.

PLACE

All of Westerville - public spaces, schools, outdoor sculptures, private businesses or just walking down a street. Art is everywhere, we can see it, hear it, taste it, feel it and perhaps (tap) dance to it as if no one is looking!

PRICE

Much of the art is Westerville has a small nominal ticket price , much is free and during the Westerville Year of the Arts, 2013, we are seeking sponsors to help create free events for our community. And if you want to contribute - we will be happy to help you give. Tell us your events/activities/programs....

PEOPLE

EVERYONE - regardless of your knowledge of the arts, we are determined to provide opportunities to enjoy our community and to experience our art venues/programs. Do you enjoy concerts, watch children sing, actually participate in art or sponsor an event. Ever wonder what to do some weekends or days in Westerville. The Westerville Today website lists, by days, events that are happening in our wonderful town.

Recently, as we have added several Westerville Public Library events/programs for kids and adults, we were excited about the variety of programs that our Library offers. From crafts, advance book copies, soccer tips, storytime for little ones and so much more.

Just to reinforce that Westerville is a Creative Cultural Community© - and as we go forward to 2012 and 2013 year of the arts - there are days that are so filled, there is no reason to complain about cabin fever.

Inniswoods programs - Art and so much more!

When discussing possible arts programs for the year of the arts, 2013, there was plenty of discussions on the art of gardening. So as always, I began a google search and saw that Inniswoods Metro Gardens, right in Westerville has some interesting upcoming programs.

The Annual Quilt Exhibit will provide the warmth we just might need as this crazy weather seems to like spring and then back to winter.

The Quilt show begins - Saturday-Sunday, January 28-29, 11a.m.-4p.m., Tuesday, January 31, 8a.m.-4:30p.m. View quilts made by members of the Columbus Metropolitan Quilters. Members will be available to answer questions Saturday and Sunday.

The Innis house also showcases local artists as well such as ARTIST OF THE MONTH: February 7-March 5, View the oil, watercolor, and charcoal artwork of Leonzo Clyde (L.C.) Waltz.

But there are preschool and older student garden classes , horticulturist speakers, wildlife walks and so much more. Look at our Westerville Today page for more information.

Get ready for a great ART YEAR 2013

It may seem like way off but 2013 will be here in, well, only 11 months but you will be hearing about it soon and alot more!

Westerville is excited to support its artists in all areas and is coming up with events and a calendar of events which can include what you are doing. Look for other social media to come as well. Facebook, twitter and more.

Whether you are a musician, painter, dancer, actor, arts organization etc. we want to know what you are doing to put in a calendar so we can celebrate the arts in Westerville.

During the past several years, the economy has cost the arts time and money. When people need gas, food and a roof over their head, art is often omitted. And yet, art does feed our soul and those who are artists know how much they need to create music, create paintings, create theatre and so much more.

The arts in Westerville is very strong but not every one is well aware of all the arts. Recitals, exhibits, classes, camps, shows - where and when are they. Help us find them. Include the traditional arts but also culinary, garden, textile and what ever you may feel is an art form. Send information to me via this blog or email here.

The year of the arts will have some signature events and many that involve hands on activities. We will report on them as they become formal. InnerVision - local music group that is truly special!

Over the past several months, we have been trying to find more artists/groups/organization to put together a list of local artists.

Searching google for a topic that had nothing to do with the arts, we came across a local group that we had never heard of but really think we should tell everyone about. thanks to Paula Shepherd

InnerVision

InnerVision is a trio of blind musicians from Westerville. Andy Love (vocals), Genene Blackwell (keyboard and vocals), and Sam Shepherd (vocals) all met at The Ohio State School for the Blind.

Andy, age 25, has already graduated and Genene and Sam, both 21, will graduate in June, 2012. They all have been blind since birth due to prematurity but they all have perfect pitch and have been making music since they were toddlers.

InnerVision started playing together in 2009. They perform a wide variety of music for a wide range of audiences, including inspirational ("You Raise Me Up"), patriotic ("God Bless America"), traditional and gospel hymns, contemporary Christian music (in the style of Casting Crowns and Chris Tomlin), oldies ("You've Lost That Loving Feeling"), pop ("I'm A Believer"), and holiday music.

This past Christmas season they booked over 20 performances all over central Ohio. They have performed at the Value City Arena for the 2011 Autism Speaks Walk (Andy has autism in addition to being blind), at the 2011 German Village Lights event, and most recently at the 7th annual Westerville MLK Jr. Breakfast at Villa Milano.

They perform for civic groups, private events, fundraisers, churches, senior citizen groups, nursing homes, government functions, dedication ceremonies, schools, and more. Andy and Sam will be performing the National Anthem at the February 8 Cleveland Cavaliers basketball game as a result of auditioning and winning a talent competition.

Last year the Westerville Parks and Rec. Dept had a new program for artists- sculptures placed around Westerville. Unfortunately, the sculptures were not by local artists and most if not all by anyone in Ohio.

This year the Parks and Recreation Dept has a proposal to include local artists. I just saw it today and the deadline to submit is January 20th - so if you want to do it.....hurry!!!!!

ProjectDescription

“Public Art inWesterville Spaces – Sculpture Project 2012-2013” is a yearlong community artsproject sponsored by the City of Westerville Parks and Recreation Department,Westerville Parks Foundation. The 2012– 2013 exhibition will feature 7 – 10 sculptures by Ohio artists.

Sculptures will be juried into theexhibit and installed outdoors, on concrete pads in high profile locations in historic uptown Westerville,Ohio and throughout City Parks and business areas.

Online and print brochures will beprovided to the public to inspire self-guided walking tours of the

exhibit.

All work must be for sale and remain inthe exhibit for the entire duration. Each artist will receive

a $500 stipend.In addition to the stipend, a grand prize of $500 will be awarded. The postmarkdeadline for submissions is January 20,2012.

Just for fun and being a football weekend (again), I spent the day up in the studio creating with found objects. But found my self just moving stuff around and not really creating anything but a mess. Writers block, artist block - whatever you call it can cause a perfectly good artists to just stop - and sometimes for too long and simply move items from one shelf to another, put down the camera or brush and wander away from our creative soul.

I just recently read It's not how good you are, it's how good you want to be by Paul Arden. A little book offering a lot of tips on how to stay in the game of business and to make the unthinkable thinkable and the impossible possible.

His advice was very appropriate to me today. "If you get stuck, draw with a different pen!" OKaayyyy - I shucked multi media paper and went to "old phones" laying in a box.

And here is the result:
Disclaimer - I am a buckeye - but my best friend and husband went to that place up north and since he is so cute and nice and does all the cooking....well......the phone didn't work so why not use it as a paperweight in his office .....:)

And for my best girlfriend who collects broken angels and wonderful thoughts.......

Somedays, just hanging around in the studio and creating nothing of importance but keeping your art alive is what is needed to survive and to laugh at yourself.I spend many hours reading magazines, books and inspiration and love when I can finally get myself to actually do instead of dreaming and collecting until a later date.

So check out this book for some inspiration to keep on going ..... or another one of my favorite inspirational books is "Orbiting the Giant Hairball" - A Corporate Fool's Guide to Surviving with Grace, by Gordon MacKenzie. Once a self-styled corporate holy man - he talks about how to maintain creativity within "any" environment.

I especially like when he talks about going to a kindergarden class and asked who is an artist and all the hands go up. By the time he is in a high school class, very few if any hands go up. I tried asking that question in a meeting of "grownups" knowing that there were artists, musicians and singers in the group. No one raised their hand because their creativity job was not their bread and butter.....too bad....we need to showcase our art side when ever we can and help others to showcase theirs.

Beat cabin fever by volunteering

Being a full time volunteer within my own business (hmmm), I recognize the need and the importance of good volunteers to any business.

Tho I love it when people ask if they can come and volunteer in an art center, I am often leery of accepting their help. Why?

First I really do need the dirty jobs done - you know - the bathrooms! And no one really wants to do that. I need help in organizing but since artists are inherently hoarders, too much get thrown away by well meaning helpers. Why would I want a bottle cap or egg cartons or even used faucets. "ummm..cause it will be an art project someday?!".

And then there is the person who knows your business better than you and wants to show you how to do it....Admittedly, I have all the information on how to run the business in my head and not on paper - something that I am slogging through with the help of a good bookeeper and board president. It's sometimes hard to explain to others the whys and whys not of what you are doing. Especially when your business doesn't fit the norm.

but volunteers are needed, especially for non profits.
There is a great organization in Columbus to help businesses find and keep good volunteers. Recently they listed a six step guide to see if you really want to volunteer. http://www.volunteermatch.org/

1. Time To Give? -- First, determine how much time you have available. You don't want to over commit and leave the organization in a lurch, and you don't want to get yourself into situation where you're not enjoying the work you're doing.

3. Does Cause Matter? -- Cause refers to the specific mission of an organization: the goals they are working for. Do you find yourself energized and inspired to change the world in one specific fashion?

4. Now You Can Start -- Once you’ve thought about availability, environment and cause, you're ready to search. But where do you start? We recommend VolunteerMatch.org, of course! Don’t forget our virtual opportunities, which you can do from anywhere. That means even though you're based in Ohio, you can help a Florida organization save manatees.

5. Getting Social -- Use our advanced search page to search for opportunities that are good for groups and kids and anyone else you want to bring with you to volunteer.

Remember when you were younger, dancing in a fancy slip - yup I'm that old - on your bed and dreamed of the Prince coming into your life as you grew up. The castle, the dresses, the prince (always handsome) and the parties to celebrate your life.

Many of us grew up and wondered what happened to our Prince - I was lucky and married him tho my castle may not be as big as Disney, the dresses just aren't frilly anymore - too hard to work in and the parties are more intimate with friends and family instead of the a kingdom. But the dream did come true - perhaps I should get dressed up and go as a princess anyway. Keep the dreams alive!

PTA Reflections - Wow what a reception

For two nights, the PTA reflections exhibit at Gallery 202 has played host to the winners of the young artists reflections program. We still have one more night of excitement for our middle schoolers to come next week.

Parents, grandparents, siblings and friends came to see their own young artist receive an award and recognition for their creativity in music, literature, dance, photography and visual arts!

What I enjoyed the most was the excitement created not only by the young artists but by the adults who complimented, enjoyed, discussed and creative a positive environment for all. There were as many "wows" by the adults as by the kids.

A big thank you to Allison and Lisa who worked hard to put on the best show yet and to all the parents who encourage their children to explore and to create! And especially to the little one who hugged her sister and clapped with bountiful enthusiasm. What fun!

Tips on being a good gallery artist

Artists are always looking for ways to promote and sell their art. Fairs, festivals, small church events, galleries are only a few of the ways to promote yourself.

There are many books on the subject and all probably have the right approach. Often I hear about promoting yourself outside of galleries because galleries are a middle person and hence do have to charge. Art is a business after all. And we realize that galleries are not for everyone.

The list provided on the website page is Gallery 202's take on how to treat yourself and the gallery of choice favorably. Artists often pour their heart and soul into their art and remembering that art business is a business is often overlooked or mis understood.

Yes galleries have to make money - often just for the utilities and rent. Gallery 202 is non profit 501.c3 gallery and is run by volunteers. No paid employee. We are getting rich in experiences (yeah right?!)

Our artists are on contracts and we do expect artists to respect those contracts. In times of economic trouble, artists often quickly quit a contract due to funds - and although, we can understand, remember we too pay rent, utilities, etc. Find alternate ways to fulfill your contract whether giving workshops, donating art or equipment.

In the beginning of a new year, it is often the time we reflect back. Here are a few of the people in my past that I remember with great fondness - artists that made a great impression on me for just being themselves.

Earl Hassenpflug was the chair of the Dept. of Art at Otterbein from 1955-1991. His work was often influenced by his travels - I remember sculptural shapes, flat colors and subtle designs that could be persons, landscapes or his own homages to great artists before his time.

I remember nervously asking him to exhibit at my earlier gallery and found his to be a very quiet, often slightly stooping older gentleman. But when you asked him to talk about his or others art, he would suddenly seem to gain years back, his step lively, his talk strong as he spoke about color, line, composition. Otterbein University has several pieces of his artwork hung around the halls. He passed away November, 2001.

A second person who I met by chance was Lillian Frank. She was a small woman, white hair tied in a bun and twinkling eyes. And she always told me what she thought about the art that was exhibited in my gallery - both good and not so good. I so enjoyed having her critiqued the exhibits and learned a great deal from her.

She taught in the Art Department at Otterbein for 29 years and lived in a reconverted church in Westerville. The church now houses Otterbein art collections (Africa, Japan and New Guinea) and is open to the public. Lillian passed away in 1999, her contribution to the arts and her home was opened in 2004 as the Frank Museum of Art. (39 S. Vine Street)

And finally I was able to visit the home of Dr. Kenneth Foltz - and enjoy his stained glass window - layered stained glass as opposed to typical look, his stained glass windows once were found in the old Holmes Hotel in Uptown. Art was such a passion for him, a relief of stress and a way he gave back to the community.

When I visited him in his home many many years ago, his proudly brought out a book that detailed some of his stained glass windows - major undertakings. Then he brought me down to his basement to see his art. I entered a room full of pedestals each with a sculpture sitting quietly on top. I remember looking into a sea of wooden fluid structures - not human but human like, not trees but like trees, organic yet inorganic.

His work can be found through out Westerville, at the Library, Otterbein and at Westerville - Astronaut Grove Park . He passed away October, 2008

there are so many great artists -visual, musical, performers in Westerville. Who do you remember?

Gallery 202, Partners in Art, Inc. is a non profit in good standing with the IRS and we do need your donations. We have received several in the past several days and thank ful to those who have donated to the gallery.

We provide a host of community services and love doing it. We are volunteered based, no one gets a paycheck unless you teach. And even our teachers provide much more than they may receive.

We have low cost classes, summer camps, space rental, free exhibit space and lots of positive energy for all our local artists.

It is that time of the year, once again, when we start thinking about the NEW year coming, and what we might do to change what we've been doing, lest we continue getting the same results.

In that spirit, starting the week of January 9th, I will be offering 6-week classes on Monday and Tuesday mornings and afternoons and Monday evenings. "How To Improve Your Paintings" is for the artist who finishes his/her paintings and knows that something isn't quite right with what they've done.

In our classes, we'll go over a variety of principles that will provide solutions and direction for the frustrated painter, comparing visual art/music/theater. At each session, one of those topics will be presented and then demonstrated, followed by time for each artist to paint what they love (in their choice of media) with hands-on help and encouragement.

Topics to be presented include Planning Your Painting and How to Get Started, Color Mixing and Matching Colors With a Limited Palette, Importance of Composition, Values/Light and Shadow, Working With the Figure, and a Studio/Plein Aire session. During class, all questions are welcomed and encouraged! Constructive, good-natured critiques will be available if desired for current or previously done paintings, with class participation encouraged. We have a great time together and grow from each other's observations and experiences. It is a warm, nurturing environment to test your wings or refine your skills, having fun and making friends in the process. Wouldn't you like to join us?

"How To Start Making Art" starts off with the very basics of drawing. Even if, or especially if you've not "done" art before, or have been away from it for years, here is an easy on-ramp to get you back and running on the creativity highway. We'll begin with doodling to get you comfortable with a pencil and some no-lose starter exercises.

We'll move on to ways to measure so you can accurately capture a likeness of an object, work on perspective, then on to using a grid to assist in composing a still life. Eventually we'll work up to coloring a drawing with colored pencil or watercolors. There is a "no competition" atmosphere, so we aren't on ego trips, but there to help each other. If you've put off following a long-lost love of art, here's a pretty painless opportunity to revive that passion, so come and play with us!

Classes are offered in the following time slots. Let me know which class and which time you would prefer, and offer a 2nd or 3rd option if possible.

First come, first served, and when a session reaches the minimum number, you will be notified that it will indeed be held. Classes are limited to a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 7. We meet in a church Sunday school craft room (NW Columbus/Worthington) with good light, a sink, tables and chairs.

Classes will meet weekly for three hours, providing 18 hours of instruction for $200. We'll finish by February 14th, just in time for Valentines Day festivities. (Provided, of course, that Mother Nature doesn't disrupt our plans with "white frosting" of her own. We will set up a messaging plan to notify each participant in case of cancellation due to weather.)

Photo journaling - local photographer is the best

One of my friends is an avid collector of url's, takes hundreds and hundreds of photos and is a great journalist. Retired now - he continues to provide local interest stories and photos for our community.

Many of you have probably seen him, standing in the middle of the street during the parade, walking around with cameras all over him, telling others that he can take their pictures in public spaces and then providing us with incredible photos.

Artists are creative hoarders!

I received a great book this Holiday Season. "A perfectly kept house is the sign of a misspent life"! (a Rizzoli book)

Artists of all types love to collect - sheet music, old ballet shoes, literary items, and for me, lots of little stuff to create multi media art. Tons of it - in two studios and an overflowing back shed.

Artists are somewhat organized hoarders and this book gave me incentive to stay just as I am. It's not about being overly cluttered but about being yourself. The book by Mary Randolph Carter takes a variety of what she calls "case histories" and talked about different individuals and families who live in an ordered chaos of their own making.

Loved it. I am a visual person and spent hours literally examining all the pictures/photos and concluded: I am one lucky person. I have my own sense of organized clutter and it is working for me.

Now of course I spent one of my holiday days off by re-organizing my closet into neatness uncompared to any neatness I had before - and discovered a few pairs of shoes I didn't know I even had.

But my studio - oh yes,it does runneth over with several projects on table tops, on the couch and even on the floor. And if you know me, the TV is very central to my life.

Holiday Week - classes being listed

so the Holidays Week is here and it is time to actually think about next year.

We have new photoclasses listed, summer camps are NOW listed for Visual Arts, Magic and Photography and soon Theatre.

The PTA reflections exhibit is still currently up and although we are on Holiday Break, join us next week to see the exhibits. Tuesday 10-2pm, Wednesday,Thursday 10-4pm, Friday 12-4pm, and Saturday 10-2pm - and often you will see us in classes - but join us and watch kids learn (all ages) and have fun!

And in Creative Minds - we have a new tie wall - a weaving project - got old ties, we will take them!

Cleaning the Creative Minds Space

Getting ready for "next year" by cleaning up the creative minds space. Lots of little bits here and there and lots scrubbing but also lots of fun memories.

We make our own clay at least 1x a month for the space that is safe for the little artists. A cup of Flour, 1/2 cup of salt, 3 tablespoons of oil, 1 cup of hot (boiling) water and the most important - flavored kool ade. It's the kool ade that adds the color and the delicious smell. We love green (lime) and purple (grape) but have tried about all different kinds.

The recipe is a typical recipe that can be adjusted by adding more or less of flour or water. If you want kids to mix, then use hot tap water and make sure it is not too hot of course. When the clay is first mixed with a spoon, the smell is wonderful. Then turn out the clay and knead by hand and the warm clay feels great.

But what to do with the clay at the end of the month - simply roll it out and make fun future ornaments. Here is an example of what we made from clay in the last months. Make sure you poke holes in each one and let dry - may be a several days/weeks to dry completely. Once dry, we let the young artists paint, glitter, glue on items or just take home a fun "ornament". These will be ready in January.

BTW - we love glitter - it is everywhere. Join us and see it in the hair, the floor, the clothes and so much more.

Shooting Christmas morning to make memorable photos

Monday Dec 19th, 7-pm at Gallery 202, 38 N. State St.

It's an annual affair and can be very frustrating for the advanced photographer hoping for more than flash-on-camera photos that used to be destined to sit in moldy photo albums stuffed at the bottom of a closet or into the corner of the attic.

Getting photos worthy of more than a glance at the turning of an album page is not difficult.

We'll talk about a couple of lighting styles, camera settings, and composition techniques that may help you shoot photos destined to be saved for use on next year's Christmas card or be the lead photo in your next family newsletter.

Also plan to add to the list of last minute gifts you want to have in your stocking. I've put together a list of items that are inexpensive to buy and provide value far beyond their cost.

Reminder: Gallery 202 is a 501c3 non-profit that is aided by your donations. The Gallery provide the space without charge and all it asks is that we cleanup after our Meetups and that everyone provide a donation -Cash is great but the space also needs everything from paper towels, toilet paper, and coffee, to art supplies and materials.

PTA Reflections is back at Gallery 202

Today, Allison, Lisa and myself spent the morning hanging the 2011 PTA reflections exhibit at Gallery 202 and no one will be disappointed this year.

Several hundreds entries are on displayed - including visual arts, dance, film, music and literature. The Gallery is alive with color, imaginations, and wonderful art related to the theme "Diversity".

Join us for the next few weeks as we celebrate the arts by Westerville students. Hours for the exhibits are
Tuesday: 10 am - 2 pm, Wednesday and Thursday : 10 am - 4 pm, Friday noon to 4 pm, and Saturday: 10-2pm.
